Long story short
OpenAI has officially confirmed it’s building a smart device. It’s called Gumdrop, and it’s designed to let you write, speak, and interact with AI without using a screen.
What happened
OpenAI has announced its first consumer hardware product: an AI-powered device coming later this year.
Here’s what the OpenAI smart device, Gumdrop, will do:
- Capture handwritten notes
- Record your voice and convert it to notes
- Send everything straight to ChatGPT
The device doesn’t need a screen. You just write or speak, and the AI processes everything.
OpenAI partnered with Foxconn (the company that makes iPhones) to build the device. After some production issues, the OpenAI smart device will be manufactured in Vietnam or the US instead of China.
This marks a big shift for OpenAI, moving from software into hardware for the first time.
They also brought in Jony Ive, Apple’s former product designer, to help create the device. A strong product needs a strong team behind it.
Remotivate’s take
Gumdrop is impressive, but the question is: would it make your team better?
Tools like Gumdrop only create value if they reduce friction. If capturing ideas becomes easier, meetings improve, decisions move more quickly, and less information gets lost.
But adding AI to every touchpoint doesn’t automatically improve productivity. If a tool creates more data to review, more notifications, or new privacy concerns, it can slow teams down instead of helping them.
Whether it’s a smart device or an AI tool, don’t adopt tools because they’re new. Adopt them because they make your workflows clearer, faster, or more focused. Technology should always simplify how your team works.
One final thought: would your team actually use Gumdrop? It’s convenient, but everything you do or say goes straight into ChatGPT. Something to think about before putting it in action.
